Character limits, platform by platform

The single most useful thing to know before you fall in love with a name. Build for the tightest limit you need and the name survives everywhere.

Four rules worth following

  • Say it out loud first

    You will hear your tag in voice chat far more than you will read it. If it takes two attempts to say, it is the wrong name — however good it looks typed.

  • Leave your real details out

    No birth year, no city, no school, no surname. A gamertag is a public handle attached to a voice, and the fewer facts it carries the better.

  • Short beats clever

    Twelve characters is the tightest budget you will hit. Build the name to fit Xbox and it fits everything else — do it the other way round and you'll be trimming letters later.

  • Claim it everywhere in one sitting

    The moment you settle on a name, register it on every platform you use plus the social handles. Names get taken in the gap between choosing and claiming.

A gamertag generator builds username ideas for gaming platforms — Xbox, PlayStation, Steam, Epic Games, Riot, Discord and the rest — by combining words from themed banks into names that fit each platform's rules. This one adds the part most generators skip: every result is checked against the real character limits and allowed characters before you ever see it, so you are not shortlisting names the platform will reject.

Yes. No account, no email, no limit on how many names you generate. Everything runs in your browser — the word banks, the assembly, the validation — so nothing you type is sent to a server, and your shortlist is stored on your own device. The one exception is deliberate: the ↗ button next to a name opens that platform's site with the name in the URL, so use it once you're happy to share the name with them.

It depends entirely on the platform. Xbox gamertags are capped at 12 characters and Nintendo Switch nicknames at 10, while Steam profile names stretch to 32. PlayStation, Epic, Riot and Minecraft all sit at 16. That is why picking your platform first matters: a name that works beautifully on Steam may be four characters too long for Xbox.

Not directly, and no honest tool can for every platform — Xbox, PlayStation and Riot only reveal availability inside their own sign-up flow. What this tool does is link you to the right place for each platform, and for the ones with public profiles (Twitch, Steam, Roblox) the link goes straight to the profile URL, where a 404 is a good sign the name is free.

Three things. It should be sayable — you will hear it in voice chat and on streams far more often than you will read it. It should be spellable from hearing it once, which rules out heavy leetspeak. And it should be short enough to survive every platform you use, so one identity carries across Xbox, Discord, Twitch and Steam instead of four different names.

It estimates how hard a name is to claim, not how good it is. Short, letters-only, pronounceable names score highest because those are exactly the ones already registered everywhere. Digits, underscores and extra length push a name toward Common — which, in practice, means you can probably still have it.

Yes. Type it into the 'Your own word' field and choose whether it sits at the start, the end, or either side. The generator will build every result around it, so you get names that feel like yours rather than a random pairing of two words.

They are generated fresh each time, but the word banks are finite, so two people running the same settings can land on the same combination. Treat a result as a candidate, not a reservation — the only thing that makes a name yours is registering it. Shortlist several and claim the first one that is free.

Discord moved away from the old name#1234 system to unique lowercase usernames, allowing letters, numbers, one period and one underscore. Your display name is separate and can still use capitals, emoji and spaces — so pick a clean lowercase username here and style the display name however you like.
